Anyone who has spent a week in the mountains knows the feeling: you sleep more deeply, your head is quieter and you have more energy than at home. That is not imagination. Over the past twenty years a solid body of research has grown around the question of what time in nature actually does to a person.
Below we set out what that research shows, how much nature those studies say you need, and why an expedition does something a walk in the woods does not.
What the research shows
Less stress
A stress response in itself is healthy. Chronic stress without recovery is not. Japanese researchers (Park and colleagues, 2010) compared, across twenty four forest sites, how participants responded to time in the forest versus time in the city. In the forest, the stress hormone cortisol, heart rate and blood pressure were all lower.
Sharper attention
Stephen Kaplan's Attention Restoration Theory (1995) describes why nature restores your concentration: a natural setting asks nothing of your directed attention, which lets the system you use all day to focus settle. Afterwards you perform better on tasks that demand attention.
A stronger immune system
Qing Li studied what multi day forest visits do to natural killer cells, part of your immune defence. He measured raised activity that remained detectable up to thirty days after the trip, and points to phytoncides: the volatile compounds trees release.
Better sleep
Sleeping outside sets your body clock by real light instead of by screens. What that does to your sleep quality in practice is covered in The impact of sleeping outside.
Faster recovery
Roger Ulrich's classic study (1984) followed patients after gall bladder surgery. Those whose hospital bed looked out on trees left hospital sooner on average and needed weaker painkillers than those facing a blank wall.
More energy
The combination of movement, fresh air and daylight delivers an energy boost that outlasts the effort itself. The effect is clearest in people who normally spend little time outdoors.

How much nature do you need?
The best known attempt to put a number on it comes from Mathew White and colleagues (2019, Scientific Reports). They surveyed almost twenty thousand people in England about their time outdoors and their health. The pattern that emerged:
- Below 120 minutes of nature per week there was no measurable difference from people who went outdoors not at all.
- From 120 minutes per week onwards, participants reported good health and high wellbeing markedly more often.
- The effect kept rising to around 200 to 300 minutes per week and then levelled off.
- It made no difference whether you took those two hours in one go or spread them across the week.
What that means in practice
Two hours a week is less than twenty minutes a day. A walk at lunchtime, cycling through the park instead of along the ring road, an hour in the woods at the weekend: that is already enough to reach the zone where the effects show up.
Why an expedition does something different
Barton and Pretty (2010) analysed ten British studies with more than twelve hundred participants between them and found that the largest gain in mood and self esteem comes in the first minutes outdoors. The curve rises more slowly after that, but it does keep rising.
That is exactly where a walk in the woods and an expedition part ways. A walk restores. An expedition adds two things you will not find in a park: duration and stakes. You are outdoors not for two hours but for eight days, with no return to your screen in between. And something is asked of you: navigating, setting up camp, keeping going when it turns against you. That combination of prolonged exposure and real responsibility is what participants afterwards describe as a reset rather than a holiday.
