EXPEDITION OMAN | 30 OCTOBER TO 9 NOVEMBER 2026
From canyon to Empty Quarter
Through the wadis through the wadis, canyons and dunes of Oman: rappelling, 4x4 and a crossing on foot.
The story of this expedition
You fly from Brussels to Muscat. A sturdy 4x4 takes us deeper into the interior, away from cities and asphalt, to where the expedition really begins. From then on we move completely off-grid: through the narrow canyons and wadis of the Hajar mountains, across rock plateaus and dry riverbeds, into the dunes of the Empty Quarter, the largest continuous sand desert on earth. On foot, by 4x4 and rappelling through canyons you have to get yourself out of.
On foot you move through wadis, across rock plateaus and into canyons so narrow your shoulders touch the walls. Rappelling is sometimes the only way through. The terrain keeps changing: from loose sand to polished rock, from cool water and shade to open heat.
The Rub al Khali, better known as the Empty Quarter, is the largest continuous sand desert on earth: dunes up to 250 metres high stretching over thousands of square kilometres. We drive deep into it by 4x4 and camp between the dunes, where the night is completely silent.
Oman is contrast within a single day: cool water at the bottom of a canyon, 35 degrees on a rock plateau, absolute silence between the dunes. You learn to manage your energy, decide and anticipate in an environment that knows no hurry.
We deliberately choose late October: Oman shows its full intensity at 30 to 35 degrees during the day, without the scorching summer heat.

Self-sufficient,
but never alone
From the moment we start, we are off-grid. We collect and filter water at the springs and pools we find along the way, cook our freeze-dried expedition food and set up camp where the terrain allows.
You learn to abseil where that is the only way out and to top up your water at the springs you come across, guided by an experienced X Guide you meet well in advance during the preparation programme.
Safety & guidance
Safety is the foundation of every Element X expedition. Our X Guides are professionally trained, hold WFR certificates and have years of experience in extreme conditions. Exactly the calibre of guidance an expedition like this requires.
Every expedition has satellite phones, GPS tracking, safety procedures, an evacuation plan and local support in Oman.
Before departure we also carry out a thorough risk analysis and prepare everything down to the last detail.
Guided by real expedition leaders.
You step into nature, away from the
beaten track, but always with the certainty of experienced guidance
and safety first.

We let no one step into the unknown unprepared.
An expedition of this calibre starts months in advance. The preparation programme consists of an individual phase and a group phase.
Individual phase
Starts immediately after registration. You receive an inspiration pack with practical tips, insights and exercises to start moving like an expedition member. You gather your expedition gear using the packing list (do not buy anything yet: bring what you already have to the kick off). And you share your medical information, because the best preparation is a plan for when things go wrong.
Group phase
Starts 3 to 6 months before departure with the kick off: a full day on which you meet your team, taste the expedition atmosphere and take the first steps as a group. There we plan the follow-up moments together and the WhatsApp group starts. Training includes, among other things: getting to know the group and roles, physical screening and analysis, a personalised training schedule, technical and resilience training, gear, nutrition and sleep setup, and a final check.

As seen in

Imagine: narrow canyons with cool water deep below the rock face, plateaus running all the way to the horizon, and dunes that fall completely silent at night.
On this expedition in Oman you are immersed in a landscape of extremes: wadis and canyons in the Hajar mountains, bare rock plateaus, and the endless dunes of the Empty Quarter. All off-grid, all under your own power.

Frequently asked questions
No. You do not need to be an elite athlete, though a decent base level of fitness helps: we walk several days in a row at 30 to 35 degrees, over sand, rock and through canyons. No rappelling experience is required. Through our preparation programme (screening, training schedule and targeted training) we build your level up to expedition standard in 3 to 6 months.
Very safe. We work with WFR certified expedition leaders, satellite communication, GPS tracking, a detailed evacuation plan and a fixed local partner in Oman. Rappelling is done with certified equipment, and every day is planned around heat, shade and water supply.
Almost everything is included: professional X Guides, the 4x4 drives, canyoning and survival equipment, sleeping setup, all overnight stays and meals during the expedition, all local transport and tips. Flights to Muscat, personal clothing and insurance are not.
