EXPEDITION MATTERHORN | JULY & AUGUST 2028
The most beautiful mountain in the world
One to one with your guide along the Hornli ridge, climbing from hut to summit.
The story of this expedition
From Brussels you travel to Zermatt, the village at the foot of the mountain that appears on every chocolate tin in the world. But this expedition is not about that image: it is about the ridge. The Matterhorn does not yield to whoever simply fancies climbing it. It asks for technique, fitness, headspace and timing. That is why we build up, day after day, until you are ready for it.
In the first days we climb summits around Zermatt at four thousand metres. Not as a warm up but as a condition: your body needs days to adapt, and your guide needs those days to see how you move.
The classic route follows a ridge of nearly twelve hundred vertical metres of climbing and scrambling. Not a walk with a rope attached, but real movement over rock, with solid holds and a constant pace. Anyone who stalls here will not make the time limit.
On summit day you climb at a ratio of one guide per climber. You leave the Hörnlihütte well before sunrise, and if everything falls into place you stand on the narrow summit in the early morning, with Italy on one side and Switzerland on the other.
We deliberately choose July and August: the window in which the ridge is at its most snow free, the huts are open and conditions at altitude are at their most stable.

Self-sufficient,
but never alone
You carry your own gear, climb on your own legs and take your share of the responsibility within the rope team. Your guide decides, but every metre is yours to take.
You learn to climb with crampons, keep going all day and accept that the weather decides whether you set off, guided by an experienced X- Guide whom you meet well in advance during the preparation programme.
Safety & guidance
Safety is the foundation of every Element X expedition. Our X Guides are professionally trained, hold WFR certificates and have years of experience in extreme conditions.
Every expedition has satellite phones, GPS tracking, safety procedures, an evacuation plan and local support in Switzerland.
Before departure we also carry out a thorough risk analysis and prepare everything down to the last detail.
Guided by real expedition leaders.
You step into nature, away from the
beaten track, but always with the certainty of experienced guidance
and safety first.

We let no one step into the unknown unprepared.
An expedition of this calibre starts months in advance. The preparation programme consists of an individual phase and a group phase.
Individual phase
Starts immediately after registration. You receive an inspiration pack with practical tips, insights and exercises to start moving like an expedition member. You gather your expedition gear using the packing list (do not buy anything yet: bring what you already have to the kick off). And you share your medical information, because the best preparation is a plan for when things go wrong.
Group phase
Starts 3 to 6 months before departure with the kick off: a full day on which you meet your team, taste the expedition atmosphere and take the first steps as a group. There we plan the follow-up moments together and the WhatsApp group starts. Training includes, among other things: getting to know the group and roles, physical screening and analysis, a personalised training schedule, technical and resilience training, gear, nutrition and sleep setup, and a final check.

As seen in

Imagine this: setting off in the dark from a hut clinging to the rock face, climbing a ridge with a thousand metres of air on either side, and a summit so narrow there is barely room to stand.
On Expedition Matterhorn you discover why this mountain commands more respect than almost any other: not because it is the highest, but because it gives nothing away.
