EXPEDITION CARPATHIANS | MARCH 2027
Improvise, adapt and overcome
The Romanian Carpathians in the Romanian Carpathians, after months of preparation: learn, apply and prove your skills.
The story of this expedition
From Belgium you fly to Bucharest. We drive inland, away from infrastructure and familiar context. At the edge of the forest, on the border of the inhabited world, phase 2 of the programme begins. From that moment you are no longer a participant, but a trainee in the most demanding classroom in the world. For nine days you build skills that last, whether you want to become a guide yourself or simply want to know where your limit lies.
Navigating by daylight is one thing. At night it is an entirely different discipline. You learn to read the landscape without a line of sight, relying on terrain contours, stars and your own judgement. Night navigation demands calm, method and a sharp mind. Skills you build in the months before departure and test under pressure in the Carpathians.
You learn how to act when things go wrong: stabilising a patient in difficult terrain, applying field first aid with limited means, carrying out evacuation procedures as a pair. Deciding under pressure, without outside advice. This is the most demanding part of the programme and the most valuable. You also learn rope work, anchor building and belaying, until you descend a vertical rock face correctly and independently.
You learn to read the terrain and use it: setting up a bivouac with minimal gear, in maximally varying conditions. Every evening you start with an empty spot, every morning you know a little more. On top of that comes the full field logistics: filtering and purifying drinking water, rationing, energy management and heat retention, with what you carry on your back.
We deliberately chose spring 2027: stable weather, crisp temperatures and no tourists. The ideal setting for a training programme that asks something of you.

Independent,
but never unprepared
At some moments you travel with your X Guide. At others you set out as a pair, without guidance. No safety net, but the knowledge you have built up over the past months. That is exactly where you discover what you have really learned.
You lay that foundation together with an experienced X- Guide whom you get to know months before departure during the preparation programme. By the time you stand in the Carpathians, you know what to expect from each other.
Safety & guidance
Safety is the foundation of every Element X expedition. Our X Guides are professionally trained, hold WFR certificates and have years of experience in extreme conditions.
Every expedition has satellite phones, GPS tracking, clear safety procedures, an evacuation plan and local support in Romania.
Before departure we also carry out a thorough risk analysis and prepare everything down to the last detail.
Guided by real expedition leaders.
You step into nature, away from the
beaten track, but always with the certainty of experienced guidance
and safety first.

We let no one step into the unknown unprepared.
An expedition of this calibre starts months in advance. The preparation programme consists of an individual phase and a group phase.
Individual phase
Starts immediately after registration. You receive an inspiration pack with practical tips, insights and exercises to start moving like an expedition member. You gather your expedition gear using the packing list (do not buy anything yet: bring what you already have to the kick off). And you share your medical information, because the best preparation is a plan for when things go wrong.
Group phase
Starts 3 to 6 months before departure with the kick off: a full day on which you meet your team, taste the expedition atmosphere and take the first steps as a group. There we plan the follow-up moments together and the WhatsApp group starts. Training includes, among other things: getting to know the group and roles, physical screening and analysis, a personalised training schedule, technical and resilience training, gear, nutrition and sleep setup, and a final check.

As seen in

This is not an expedition where you are guided from point to point. You learn the techniques professional guides and expedition leaders use to hold their own in the most demanding conditions. If that is the direction you want to go, this is your first step. If you mainly want to test yourself, these are nine days in which you discover how much you can handle.
The Romanian Carpathians were chosen deliberately. Rugged enough to challenge you, varied enough to make every part of the training programme meaningful. A landscape that forgives nothing and reveals everything: which is exactly why you come out of it more confident than you went in.
