The nomads of Kyrgyzstan still live by old traditions. They move with their herds, live in yurts and rely on their knowledge of nature to survive. Their hospitality is legendary: a stranger is always received with tea, bread and a warm welcome. On our expedition we spend time with local nomad families. You see what daily life looks like without the modern comforts we take for granted, and you get a rare look inside a centuries old culture.
The best places to trek and camp
Kyrgyzstan is a paradise for trekkers and campers. A few places you should not miss on our expedition:
- Tian Shan range: high passes, epic gorges and panoramic views over endless valleys.
- Son-Kul lake: a vast highland lake where nomads graze their herds.
- Kel-Suu lake: a spectacular mountain lake ringed by steep cliffs, one of the most remote spots in the country.
- Ala-Kul trek: a demanding hike to a glacial lake at 3,500 metres.
What you actually do on the expedition
On our Adventure Trail we combine the most iconic activities Kyrgyzstan has to offer. You start with an adventurous 4x4 drive that takes you deep into the mountains, far from the beaten track. Then comes a multi day trek through the Tian Shan range, with epic views and demanding terrain. Packrafting down a scenic, meandering river adds a new dimension to the adventure. Horse riding takes you deep into the valley, along routes no vehicle can reach, and gives you an authentic taste of nomadic life. We finish with wild camping under the stars and a night in a traditional yurt.
